Overview: Where culinary artistry meets immersive design, this 2,320 sq. ft. restaurant reimagines Dhaka's dining landscape as a sensorial journey that celebrates Bengali heritage through contemporary spatial storytelling.
Design Vision: Industrial poetry meets Dhaka's vibrant street food culture in a space that balances raw materiality with refined details. Exposed brick walls bearing the patina of time converse with sleek brass mesh partitions, while a central "market table" of reclaimed teak becomes the stage for culinary performances. The lighting design mimics the golden hour glow of Old Dhaka's alleyways, with suspended filament bulbs casting dynamic shadows across textural walls.
Challenges & Solutions:
Challenge: The narrow frontage required creating an impactful arrival sequence
Solution: A telescoping facade of folding brass screens reveals glimpses of the interior while evoking traditional market stall shutters
Material Palette:
Floors: Hand-poured terrazzo with crushed local pottery aggregate
Walls: Lime-washed brick with subtle metallic glazing
Bar Front: Hammered copper panels that develop a rich patina over time
Ceiling: Blackened steel beams with woven jute acoustic panels
Tabletops: Honed black granite with fossilized leaf impressions
Custom Features:
Chef's Theater Counter: A U-shaped bar with embedded induction cooktops and rising exhaust vents
Modular Banquettes: Reconfigurable seating on silent casters for flexible layouts
Spice Display Walls: Backlit resin panels encasing vibrant spice arrangements
Retractable Roof Garden: Hydroponic herb wall that lowers into the kitchen
Bazaar Lighting System: Adjustable pendant clusters that mimic market stall lighting
Client Collaboration: Designed for a celebrity chef returning from abroad, we incorporated their collection of vintage culinary tools into display walls and created a private tasting room with a show kitchen for masterclasses. Their vision of "elevated street food" inspired our material juxtapositions.
Impact: The space has become a culinary landmark where every design element enhances the dining narrative. Morning prep work happens under cool, even light, while evening service transforms the space into a warm, convivial stage. The interplay of rough textures and precise details creates an environment that feels simultaneously grounded and extraordinary.
Signature Moment: The entry portal's "spice portal" - a backlit archway filled with layered spices suspended in resin - announces the dining experience with an aromatic visual feast, preparing guests for the multisensory journey ahead.
