Overview: Where contemporary design meets Dhaka's vibrant street life, this 3-bedroom apartment transforms urban living into a serene retreat through a masterful interplay of light, texture, and innovative space-saving solutions.
Design Vision: Industrial warmth meets Bengali craft traditions in a space that celebrates raw materials and artisanal details. Exposed concrete ceilings with subtle formwork textures contrast with hand-carved teak screens, while a moody palette of charcoal, terracotta, and brass creates depth and sophistication. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame dynamic city views, with custom jali screens filtering sunlight into mesmerizing patterns that dance across the walls throughout the day.
Challenges & Solutions:
Challenge: The irregularly shaped living area needed to accommodate both formal entertaining and casual family time
Solution: A curved, rotating partition wall with dual finishes (concrete one side, woven cane the other) creates flexible zones while maintaining an open feel
Material Palette:
Floors: Honed basalt tiles with a leather-like texture
Walls: Textured lime plaster in warm earth tones
Millwork: Black-stained mango wood with brass inlay detailing
Countertops: Leathered granite with dramatic mineral veining
Textiles: Handwoven nakshi kantha throws and dhurries
Custom Features:
Multifunctional Media Wall: Combining display shelves, hidden storage, and integrated lighting in a sculptural composition
Smart Kitchen Hub: Retractable appliance garage and pop-up ventilation system
Convertible Guest Room: Wall bed with built-in workspace that disappears into millwork
Balcony Biosphere: Vertical garden with edible plants and automated irrigation
Primary Suite Sanctuary: Automated blackout shades and circadian lighting system
Client Collaboration: Designed for a family of artists, we incorporated gallery-style lighting tracks and movable display walls to showcase their rotating collection. Their need for both creative workspaces and relaxation zones inspired our innovative room configurations.
Impact: The apartment achieves a perfect balance of urban energy and tranquil retreat. Morning light filters softly through the jali screens, creating ever-changing shadow patterns, while evening ambient lighting transforms the space into a moody, intimate haven. Raw materials feel unexpectedly luxurious through thoughtful detailing, proving that sophistication needn't sacrifice warmth.
Signature Moment: The double-height dining area's suspended light installation - crafted from recycled boat-building materials by local artisans - casts mesmerizing shadows that animate the space like living artwork, perfectly embodying the project's fusion of industrial and artisanal aesthetics.
