Project 0018

Overview: A majestic reinterpretation of Bangladeshi architectural heritage, this sprawling duplex apartment weaves together ancestral craftsmanship with contemporary luxury, creating a timeless family compound that honors tradition while embracing modern living.

Design Vision: Inspired by the region's historic zamindar homes, the space reimagines traditional elements through a modern lens. High ceilings with intricate wood beam work reference classic Bengali architecture, while expansive glazing floods the interiors with dappled sunlight filtered through custom jali screens. A rich material palette of locally-sourced materials connects the residence to its Norshingdi roots, with each of the seven bedrooms telling its own story through distinct textile patterns and artisan collaborations.

Challenges & Solutions:

  • Challenge: Creating intimacy within the grand scale while maintaining visual connectivity

  • Solution: A series of raised seating platforms and sunken conversation pits create natural gathering nodes, while a double-height central atrium with floating walkways preserves breathtaking sightlines

Material Palette:

  • Floors: Hand-cut terracotta tiles with a honed finish, arranged in traditional Bangladeshi patterns

  • Walls: Lime plaster mixed with local clay for warm earth tones

  • Ceilings: Reclaimed century-old timber beams with hand-carved details

  • Millwork: Dark rosewood cabinetry with brass inlay motifs

  • Textiles: Handwoven jamdani silks and nakshi kantha embroidery

Custom Features:

  1. Floating Staircase: A sculptural marvel of folded brass and teak, illuminated from within

  2. Monsoon Veranda: A climate-controlled indoor/outdoor transitional space with retractable glass walls

  3. Ancestral Kitchen: A modern interpretation of traditional chouka cooking spaces with hidden smart appliances

  4. Family Archive Room: Temperature-controlled display walls for heirlooms with integrated lighting

  5. Rooftop Pavilion: A breezy entertainment space with a plunge pool and panoramic countryside views

Client Collaboration: Designed for a multigenerational family with deep roots in the region, we incorporated their collection of antique furniture through careful restoration and adaptive reuse. Their need for both communal gathering spaces and private retreats inspired our courtyard-style layout with layered privacy zones.

Impact: The residence stands as a living testament to Bangladeshi craftsmanship, where every doorway arch, textile selection, and material junction tells a story. Morning light filters through the jali screens to cast ever-changing patterns across the terracotta floors, while evening gatherings in the courtyard-style living area reconnect the family to generations of tradition. Modern conveniences disappear seamlessly into the background, allowing the timeless quality of the space to take center stage.

Signature Moment: The central atrium's "floating" chandelier - a contemporary interpretation of traditional brass oil lamps, crafted by local artisans using centuries-old metalworking techniques - becomes a mesmerizing focal point that draws the eye upward through all three levels, symbolizing the connection between heritage and modernity.
